Mercedes Motorsport director Toto Wolff is aware of the problems that have befallen his factory team this season. This is what ultimately prevented Lewis Hamilton from winning Formula 1 in 2022.
This is the first time Lewis Hamilton has failed to win a single win in a season. Even his teammate, George Russell, could only set foot on the podium once (Brazilian Formula 1).
Mercedes' decline in quality can also be seen in the Formula 1 2022 constructors' standings. At the end of the season, the Mercedes factory team was in 3rd place, losing to Ferrari and Red Bull Racing RBPT.
“We now better understand what problems we had with the car. We have identified many more of them and understand them too. And at one point we understood very well why the car didn't work the way we wanted," said Toto, quoted from Speedweek.
According to Toto, this problem arose in the design of Mercedes racing cars. In other words, the Mercedes factory team's engine did not experience significant problems, even though Hamilton had experienced problems in Formula 1 Abu Dhabi.
“It's about the small details that we can improve aerodynamically on the car to create a more stable base for next year. There are several factors that account for the fact that this car is not good enough," he added.
He further explained that the Mercedes factory team would be more focused on welcoming Formula 1 2023. Toto Wolff also admitted that he was confident in welcoming the new F1 season later.
"If we can control for these factors and find the right solutions during the winter break, then we can create a good starting position to drive further development," he concluded.
